2021-2022 Teacher of the Year

Jackie Huffman

My name is Jackie Huffman, and I am originally from a tiny Pennsylvania coal mining town named Sligo.  I graduated in 1996 and started my college career as a business major at Clarion University until I started my first business class on the second day of my freshman year.  I KNEW it wasn’t for me, and switched my major to English and History education that very day and never looked back!  I then moved to Oklahoma with my family in 1998, and transferred to Northwestern Oklahoma State University, where I received two bachelor’s degrees, one in English Education with a minor in theater and the other in History with a minor in Psychology.  I then went on to earn my Masters’ degree in Education from the University of Central Oklahoma in 2014.  I married my husband, Larry, in 2002, and we currently live in Guthrie with our two fur babies, Uzi and Remy!

This is my 18th year at North, but I have been teaching for 20 years.  My first job in education was teaching science and running the overnight camping program at the Oklahoma Science Museum – I had an 8 foot Burmese Python for an office mate!  I learned so much while working here because I was forced to teach a new subject on a daily basis, which meant I had to figure out a way to teach something that I was unfamiliar with while making it fun AND educational!  It helped me reflect about the learning process my students would be taking, so I could try to plan for a smoother path towards growth!

I am fortunate enough to teach in the same building with my sister, Math teacher, Sarah Lambert, and her husband, Anatomy and Human Biology teacher, Brian Lambert, so North truly is a family atmosphere for me.  I work with some of the greatest colleagues in the world, and I bleed blue and grey – I absolutely love being a Husky and supporting all of the sports, clubs and programs here at North, and hope to one day retire from here!  I currently teach English IV, Intro to Journalism and Yearbook, after teaching Freshman English for 14 years.

My absolute favorite part of education is cultivating wonderful relationships with my students so I can watch them as they begin to learn new information that then changes their lives.  I love that moment when I can see in a student’s eyes that he or she JUST finally GOT what I was trying to teach.  Seeing this look of pride and satisfaction on a student’s face is one of the best experiences any teacher can possibly have because you know you didn’t just teach one thing – you’ve taught that student how to problem solve and learn for LIFE!

I look forward to coming to school every day and not only teaching, but learning lessons from my students.  The staff and students I work with make me a better person on a daily basis, and for that, I am truly grateful!
